Survey incentives that work (and the ones that backfire)

When to pay for answers, how much, and how to keep incentives from attracting the wrong respondents.

Your own customers: small and certain

A guaranteed small reward (a discount code, a few dollars) outperforms a prize draw. People discount lottery odds heavily. Make the reward proportional to time: a two-minute survey does not need one.

Strangers: pay fairly, verify always

Paid panels only work when every participant is verified and every response is quality-checked, otherwise the incentive attracts speeders and bots. SurveyHood credits rewards only after human review, and participants see their pending and approved balances transparently.

What backfires

Large prizes, vague 'chance to win' promises, and rewards that depend on giving a particular answer. Each one changes who answers and what they say.
